Information collected automatically

When you visit our site we collect technical information including your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how long you spend on them, and the site you arrived from. This is collected through cookies and similar technologies. See Cookies and tracking below.

How we collect it

Most of the time we collect information directly from you, when you place an order, create an account, subscribe, or send us a message.

Some information is collected automatically as you use the site.

Occasionally we receive information from third parties, such as a payment provider confirming a transaction, or a delivery carrier updating the status of a parcel. Where it's reasonable and practicable to do so, we collect personal information from you rather than from someone else.

Why we use it

We use your personal information to:

  • Process, fulfil and deliver your order
  • Contact you about your order, including dispatch and delivery updates
  • Assess and manage trade and wholesale accounts
  • Respond to your enquiries
  • Send you marketing emails, where you have asked to receive them
  • Publish reviews you have submitted
  • Understand how the site is used, so we can improve it
  • Detect and prevent fraud
  • Meet our legal, tax and record-keeping obligations

We do not sell your personal information.

Information sent overseas

Some of our service providers store or process information outside Australia. This includes Shopify (Canada and the United States), Google (United States), Publuu (Poland and the European Union)[, and Meta (United States)].

Before disclosing personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles it consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles. By providing your information to us, you acknowledge that it may be stored or processed in these countries, and that overseas recipients may be subject to different privacy laws to those in Australia.

Cookies and tracking

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use them to:

  • Keep your cart and session working (these are essential and can't be switched off)
  • Understand how visitors use the site, through Google Analytics
  • Measure the performance of our advertising

Pages that include our book preview use an embedded viewer supplied by Publuu. That viewer may set its own cookies, which are governed by Publuu's privacy policy rather than ours.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. If you block essential cookies, parts of the site, including checkout, will stop working.

Marketing emails

We'll only send you marketing emails if you've opted in. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and we'll action it promptly. You can also email us at [EMAIL] to be removed.

Unsubscribing from marketing won't stop transactional messages about an order you've placed, such as a dispatch confirmation.

How long we keep it

We keep personal information only as long as we need it.

  • Order and transaction records: seven years, to meet Australian tax and business record-keeping requirements
  • Mailing list: until you unsubscribe
  • Enquiries: generally two years after the matter is resolved
  • Trade accounts: for the life of the account, then seven years

When we no longer need information and aren't required to keep it, we destroy it or de-identify it.

Keeping it secure

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Our site runs over an encrypted connection, and card payments are handled by PCI DSS compliant providers.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

Accessing and correcting your information

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct anything that's wrong or out of date. Email [EMAIL].

We'll usually respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity first. There's no charge for making a request, though we may charge a reasonable fee for the cost of supplying a large volume of information. If we refuse a request, we'll explain why in writing.

Making a complaint

If you think we've mishandled your personal information, please contact us first at [EMAIL]. We'll acknowledge your complaint and aim to resolve it within 30 days.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner:

  • Web: oaic.gov.au
  • Phone: 1300 363 992
  • Post: GPO Box 5218, Sydney NSW 2001

Children

Our store is intended for adults. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us at [EMAIL] and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated shown at the top. If we make a significant change, we'll make that clear on the site.
